Banking with a smile in Ballito

Prestige banker's advice is to save and invest.

The days of pulling out your hair due to frustrating banking could be over.

Meet Deven Pillay, the new prestige banker at the Lifestyle Centre Standard Bank, Ballito.

As a prestige banker, Pillay acts as a relationship banker, giving his clients a private banking experience.

“I have always wanted to go into banking and when I was accepted for a learnership at Standard Bank roughly nine years ago, I got to know the company and I liked their thinking,” which is why the young banker never left.

Besides banking, he enjoys golf, soccer and traveling.

“I spent a couple of weeks in England and France in 2013 and loved it, the infrastructure, buildings, lifestyle, it was just great to be in a first world country”, he explained and his eyes lit up.

“France was amazing, I took seven hundred photos in three days.”

He fondly remembers watching his favourite soccer team, Liverpool, play in Liverpool and describes it as a “great experience”.

Pillay has also recently traveled to the Far East and although he thought Singapore was interesting, he found Kuala Lumpur similar to Durban.

Dubai however blew his mind.

“Even the bus shelters have aircon, because the Sheikh realised that people were getting hot while waiting for the bus.”

When asked for some financial advice, as everyone feels the bite of our struggling economy, the young bachelor said there is a clear trend to tone down the lavish lifestyles, as people have become more wary of borrowing money for luxury goods.

“Save, invest and reap the benefits later” is Pillay’s advice, so maybe cook at home a bit more often, cut down on the shoe shopping and your bank account will thank you later.
