Gift of sight for cataract patients

Cataract Surgery Camp hosted for disadvantaged.

A number of under-privileged residents of Ilembe district were recently given the gift of sight.

The Rotary Club of Zimbali in partnership with NPO African Vision and the iLembe Health department hosted a Cataract Surgery Camp at Maphumulo Provincial hospital from November 1 to 3.

On the first day of the surgery camp, ophthalmologists from Durban, Dr Gcobami Tuswa and Dr Lourems Coetzee performed surgery on 43 patients from Ndwedwe, Sundumbili, Mandeni and Maphumulo.

On November 2 post-operative screening was done to determine the success of the operations from Saturday.

Thereafter cataract operations were performed on 50 more patients.

These were from Stanger, Ntunjambili and Maphumulo and post-operative screening was done on November 3 at Maphumulo and Stanger hospitals.

Operation Bright Eyes is close to the hearts of Zimbali Rotary members.

They had raised funds to the tune of R100 000 towards this initiative.

Over the past four years they have funded three previous surgery camps and are looking into funding another Cataract Surgery Camp next year.

“The club thanks African Vision for co-ordinating and setting up this camp,” said Zimbali Rotary executive member, Kosh Thaver.
