Ten ways to be safe this holiday

Safety tips from the police.

As the festive season approaches, many people will be travelling outside the province or even the country.

Umhlali SAPS gave us ten tips for making your holiday a safe one:

1. Always travel with the car doors locked. Windows must be close or, at most, not open more than would allow a hand to fit through.

2. Remain in your car if it is hit from behind. Check for any damage only once you are sure it is not a hijacking attempt.

3. Constantly monitor what vehicles are travelling behind, ahead and next to you. If you suspect that you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station. If this is not possible, drive to another safe place but do not go home.

4. If approached by a suspicious looking person, especially at night or in lonely areas, drive off quickly, always heeding possible traffic dangers.

5. When you come across an accident do not stop unless you are convinced it is genuine, rather drive to the nearest police station and report it or phone 10111.

6. Before you leave your home ensure that doors are locked and windows are closed. Get a lock for your gate even if your gate works electronically.

7. If you are going to be away for an extended period, inform your family or neighbours of your intended destination, time you expect to return and the route you will be driving.

8. Think twice before advertising your impending absence on social media. Criminals also have access to Facebook and Twitter.

9. Tell your domestic worker or house-sitter not to allow strangers inside the house without checking with you first.

10. If you have dogs, a least one dog should be trained to sleep inside the house to protect you or your house-sitter.
