A family of four were enjoying the morning on Tinley Manor second car park beach yesterday, when a big wave changed everything.
According to IPSS Medical Rescue paramedic Paul Herbst a father was watching his three children playing in the waves, when a big wave pulled them into the ocean.
“The father ran into the water to try help them, but he was also pulled in by the strong current. Fishermen nearby saw what happened and helped with the rescue,” said Herbst
One of the fishermen, Toolsi Sewsumker, managed to pull out the father and one of his sons who were in the most trouble, before assisting the other two children who had managed to swim closer to the shore.
KwaDukuza lifeguard supervisor, Bongani Xulu, said a call was received at about 8:14am, but because there are currently no lifeguards stationed at this particular beach out of season, lifeguards from Salt Rock and the IPSS Medical Rescue aquatic unit rushed to the scene to assist with the rescue.
All three children and their father were brought safely to shore.
“From December 8, lifeguards will be permanently stationed at this beach, but until then it is advised to rather swim at protected beaches,” said Xulu.
Xulu said the beach’s lifeguard tower and other beach facilities had recently been completed.
