The silence and stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS must be broken and replaced by openness, good communication and compassion.
This was the message Alberlito Hospital HR manager Kgomotso Makeni shared at the hospitals’ Aids Day event on Monday, December 1
Makeni openly shared his own pain in losing a a family member to HIV AIDS.Makeni lost his uncle in 2003 and he said his uncle found out that he was HIV positive in 1996.
“The family kept it a secret. Even when he started to get sick people were told that he had TB.”
He urged people not to feel shy, but speak about it and get help.Makeni said that it not about how you got the disease but it how you live with it. “We are all either affected or infected by this disease,” he said.
At the event Salt Rock artist Steve Vander Schyff donated a landscape painting to be auctioned later in December to raise funds for the Rose Zwane Orphanage in Lindelani, Stanger.
