No progress since demolition

Nothing happening at old satellite station.

None of the promises regarding the old Ballito satellite station have been kept.

National department of public works (DPW) spokesperson Thami Mchunu was quoted in the Courier on September 26 as saying that the department’s gardening service would clean up and clear the site, including the removal rubble after demolishing the rickety old buildings.

The department’s security management team would also have beefed up security on the property.

Three months later the buildings have been knocked down but the rubble is still there.

The overgrown grass and shrubs were cleared out but then left to grow back again and the rusted old fence is still lying flat on the ground in places. Large piles of garden refuse from the initial cleaning effort were also never removed.

The DPW started cleaning up the property in October in response to ongoing complaints that the property posed a security risk to the community as the buildings provided shelter to transients and criminals.

We had not received a response from the DPW at the time of going to print.
