Beach bum bushbuck

Bushbuck roamed the streets of Ballito.

A bushbuck that was rescued from the beach on Friday may need to be darted and relocated.

Chaka’s Rock residents reported on Friday, December 12, that the animal had got caught up on the rocks between the Santorini residential complex and Willard beach.

Specialised Rescue Unit (SRU) sprang into action and guided the fully grown male bushbuck up to a nearby garden where they kept it safely until nightfall.

“At around 6pm with the help of about 15 community volunteers we guided the animal back to the natural bush at Waterberry coffee shop where it was believed to have come from,” said SRUs Quintin Power.

“The rescue was a community effort but Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife had been consulted,” said Power.

Early the next morning the SRU was on the same animal’s trail again after it had been spotted wandering the streets of Salt Rock between Ocean Drive, Little Maritzburg and Dolphin Crescent.

“We managed to escort it to the mangroves behind the Salt Rock municipal offices where we left it for the moment,” said Power.

On Sunday the now famous bushbuck was back on the streets.

“I received a call about the animal on Sunday and referred the caller to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife,” said Monkey Help Line’s Steve Smit.

He said the animal would have to be darted with M99 and moved somewhere else before it gets run over by a car, shot by a civilian or injures someone with its massive horns.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife could not be reached for comment at the time of going to print.
