KwaDukuza lifeguards at Blythedale Beach said they are delighted with the new R3.3 million lifeguard facility built for them at the popular beach.
“It will make our job so much easier and it really improves our working conditions,” said northern section lifeguard supervisor Freedom Mthethwa.
KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu and deputy mayor Dolly Govender officially opened the tower on Wednesday December 10.
Mthethwa said that during the festive season there are usually about 3000 people on the beach and the new tower is high enough for them to have a good view of the whole beach and out to sea.
“When you are on top of the building you can see far and wide and that will make it easy for us to ensure the safety of everyone on the beach,” he said.
The beach now also has sparkling new ablutions with upgraded showers and new toilets.
Major revamps of lifeguard facilities are being done up and down the coast in KwaDukuza, with Tinley Manor Beach also sporting a new look lifeguard centre.
