Sewage spills into sea at Chaka’s Rock

Area cordoned off while workers try to fix the problem.

Sewage water has been flowing onto the beach and into the sea between Chaka’s Rock and Salt Rock beaches since around 11am this morning.

Sembcorp Siza Water spokesperson Khosi Mathenjwa said workers are busy repairing the burst pipe that caused the spill.

The water pumps were switched off shortly after the burst pipe had been discovered but due to the large size of the burst pipe residual water still flowed for a few hours.

“Repair work is expected to be completed by around 6pm because workers have to dig manually, which takes more time,” said Mathenjwa.

The affected area has been cordoned off and swimming beaches remain unaffected.
