Spear fisherman discovers corpse near Westbrook
The body was retrieved from the rocks between Westbrook beach and the Tongaat River mouth.
A local spear fisherman accidently discovered a corpse near Westbrook beach last night.
Byron Peach had been in the water for about half an hour before coming across the grisly sight at around 5.15 pm.
“The water was clear and I saw a strange object lying on the ocean floor about three meters away,” said Peach.
Upon closer inspection he realised what he had stumbled upon and he quickly went back to shore to call the Specialised Rescue Unit.
“The body was obviously not in a good condition and it has been a bit of a shock to me,” said Peach.
Specialised Rescue Unit’s Quintin Power notified the Westbrook lifeguards who swiftly launched their rubber duck.
“When Quintin arrived we went out on their jetski to assist with the body retrieval,” said Peach.
The body was retrieved about 50 meters out from the rocks between Westbrook beach and the Tongaat River mouth at an estimated depth of seven meters.
“The Tongaat SAPS detective on duty said this was possibly the body of the person who disappeared from Westbrook beach on Tuesday night when a fight broke out at a big party,” said Power.
The Tongaat SAPS could not confirm whether this was the case at the time of publication.
