A good move for chess kids

The Ilembe Chamber of Commerce boosts chess players.

Promising Ilembe chess players will compete in the South African Junior Chess Championships in January 2015, thanks to a kind donation.

Generous contributions from business members of the Ilembe Chamber of Commerce, made it possible for the Ilembe Chess Association to send their most promising, underprivileged chess players from Maphumulo to the championships.

Whirlpool donated a chest freezer which was raffled off during the Chamber’s end of year business lunch and Alton Scharneck from Avis Rent A Car was the lucky winner. The money raised through the raffle was doubled by a chess challenge between Natalie Wocke from Roberts & Chaplin Accounting and Gerhard Breedt from Gerhard Architects – the winner will remain anonymous!

Deirdre Hulett, Ashton’s Group IT/Branding manager, who assisted with the fund raising, thanked Ilembe based businesses for supporting their local chess players.

“Besides the opportunity to play chess against other provincial teams, the children will be gaining so many life skills by being given the opportunity to go to the nationals. We have managers and coaches accompanying the team, but really needed the financial support,” she said.

The selected players will represent KZN at the Championships in Kimberley from January 2 to 8 next year.
