KZN experiences steep decline in Matric results
National pass rate drops to 75.8%
The minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga announced the 2014 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exam results last night, and KwaZulu-Natal experienced the steepest decline of all the provinces.
The Class of 2014 was the first group to write the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) aligned exams and the national pass rate was 75.8%, down 2.4 percentage points from last year’s record 78.2%.
But the KwaZulu-Natal province saw the biggest drop in the provincial results.
KZN achieved 69.7% this year, dropping 7.7 percentage points from their 77.4% in 2013.
“KZN has the largest numbers of Grade 12 learners in the NSC examinations,” said Motshekga during the announcement on Monday evening.
“We need to look seriously into the factors affecting KZN’s performance,” she said.
Meanwhile Gauteng was named the top performing province with 84.7%.
In terms of University exemption, 35 724 candidates from KZN have qualified for Bachelor studies.
