Child drowns in Tugela River, Newark

Second drowning in this weekend.

Our rivers have claimed thier second victim in one weekend.

A five-year-old child reportedly drowned while playing in the Tugela River at Newark on Sunday afternoon.

Police Search and Rescue divers and IPSS Medical Rescue were called to the river at about 6pm yesterday to begin the search.

They have returned this morning to continue looking for the child.

On Saturday a 12-year-old boy drowned while attempting to cross the Umvoti River near the Umgeni Water Works.

Divers searched the muddy water for about an hour and a half, before recovering the body of the boy.
