A small blue duiker was rescued from the sea at Willard Beach on January 4.
Holidaymaker Wessel Neuhoff took care of the duiker until it was released back into the wild the next day.
“We saw a small dog chasing what we thought was another dog into the sea.
When we got closer we saw that it was not a dog at all, but a small duiker and that it was not swimming out of the water. It was in trouble,” said Neuhoff.
He then rescued the antelope and took it to his house on Minerva Road, before releasing it the next day.
Responding to queries on Facebook, residents suggested he release the duiker in the natural bush next to the Waterberry restaurant.
The blue duiker is the smallest antelope in South Africa, standing about 35cm high and weighing about 4kg.
It is a forest dweller, commonly found locally in the coastal bush, where they eat fruit, flowers, and leaves which have fallen from the canopy, as well as eggs and insects.
