A day of hair cut and spray

CANSA Shavathon a resounding success.

Hundreds of people made the decision at the annual CANSA Shavathon over the weekend to either shave off their hair or spray some colour in support of cancer.

The CANSA Shavathon went down on Saturday at the Lifestyle Centre and Tiffany’s shopping centre where between them a total amount of R22 000 was raised and will go to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).

Lifestyle Centre floor manager Elaine Becker said they raised R10 000 and Ashleigh Naicker from Ashleigh D Hair and Nail Salon at Tiffany’s Shopping Centre said they raised R12 000.

“Last year we raised a little more than R5000 and this year we managed to double that. I am so proud of my team of volunteers,” said Becker.

Naicker said her family has been affected by the disease as her uncle passed away due to cancer and her aunt is a breast cancer survivor.

“My mother has recently been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and so by hosting the Shavathon we are supporting her to stay strong,” said Naicker.

Businesswoman Tanya Hayward also braved the clippers and shaved her hair in support of her grandmother.

“My granny passed away due to cancer and today (Saturday) it was her birthday,” said Hayward.

The Lifestyle Centre had about 260 people coming in to their tent to shave or spray their hair in support of those affected by cancer.

At Tiffany’s there were about 92 people who took part in the Shavathon.

Breast cancer survivor Marsha Marnewisk said she was shaving her hair for those women who are also fighting breast cancer.

Becker and Naicker said they were grateful for the support of the community and thanked all the sponsors that made it such a special event.
