Double murder suspect remanded in custody

Maphumulo man arrested.

One of the men believed to have been behind the execution style murder of two young girls in Maphumulo in January appeared in court on Monday.

Xolani Gamede (28) appeared in the Maphumulo Magistrates’ Court and the case was remanded to March 17 for a formal bail application.

According to police on the afternoon of 1 January two young girls, Zandile Ngubane (17) and Ayabulela Ngubane (23), accepted a lift from two men in the Masangweni area of Maphumulo.

The women were later forced from the vehicle and shot.

On Friday March 6, 28-year-old Gamede was traced and arrested at Ezakheni, Ladysmith.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the police for the arrest.

“This shows that you cannot evade the long arm of the law. We have a duty to safeguard our communities and remove criminals off our streets,” she said.
