Swarm of bees kills man near Mandeni

Elderly man dies after being stung multiple times.

A man was found dead in his car this morning outside Mandeni, and is thought to have been killed by an alergic reaction to bee stings.

According to KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert Mckenzie their paramedics found the vehicle on the N2 highway, between the R102 Link road and the Mandeni toll plaza, with little damage to the car.

“When they assessed the driver, an elderly man estimated to be in his late sixties, they found that he had sadly already passed away.”

Passing motorists who had seen the car leave the road and who had stopped to assist the man told paramedics that the man said he had stopped on the side of the road and was picking fruit from a tree on the side of the road, when he was attacked by a swarm of bees.

The man had been stung multiple times.

“He then ran to his car and had apparently managed to drive about one kilometre before leaving the road, which is where the passers-by found him and called EMS,” said Mckenzie.
