Turning townships green

Young people going green and cleaning up their communities.

A group of young people in Shakaville have decided to take the “green” initiative and clean up KwaDukuza townships.

They have a dream of turning all the unused land in the townships into parks and educating residents about recycling and taking care of the environment. To facilitate this, they have started a non-profit organisation called Sikhulile Community Development.

“Most unused land become places of illegal dumping and we want to clean up and plant trees,” said chairperson Sbusiso Ngubane.

Ngubane said many township people do not know what can and cannot be recycled.

“We want to teach them so that they will know that they can make money out of things they throw away as rubbish. Those who do not want to sell the recyclable items can call us. We will come and collect it,” said Ngubane.

They are currently targeting the KwaDukuza townships of Ntshawini, Groutville and Etete.

“We want to clean all the townships in KwaDukuza, however these are the areas we think need urgent clean ups.”

Currently their biggest challenge is transport.

“If we had our own transport, it would be easy for us to travel around the townships and clean up the waste and educate people on how to keep their environment clean,” said Ngubane.

The organisation has five executive members and ten volunteers and according to Ngubane most of them are unemployed.

“We need any kind of sponsorship because we currently have no equipment for our work. We also need a camera to take photos for record keeping purposes,” said Ngubane.

If you wish to help the group you can contact Ngubane on 078 672 3797.
