Family devastated after Ballito man dies in Malawi
Tried to protect fellow traveller.
The family of Harry Wakeford said they are devastated to hear about his death in the early hours of Saturday morning in Malawi.
Barry Chapman said Wakeford, who is his father-in-law, was shot in the chest after he tried to protect a fellow traveller.
“A group of men entered one of the tents at around 2am and tried to rob them when one of the ladies started screaming,” said Chapman.
“My father-in-law got up to see what was happening and tried to protect the woman and in the process got shot in the chest.”
Chapman’s father Richard and brother Warwick were with Wakeford when he was shot.
“They were on their way back from the Democratic Republic of Congo where they went to see the gorillas.”
“This trip was his life, they have been planning it for the past eight months and it meant a lot to him,” said Chapman.
He said Wakeford’s body will be transported to Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi where a post-mortem will be done before his body can be returned home.
