A five-year-old child was kidnapped, assaulted and raped on Saturday night in Etete’s Velani Township.
The child was found by community members on Sunday morning near a stream with injuries to her head and was taken to hospital where she died on Monday morning.
The man who is accused of committing the crime was arrested and he appeared in Umhlali Court on Tuesday.
Etete residents protested outside the court to oppose a bail for the accused.
Velani township councillor Njabulo Mbonambi said he was not sure whether the man was from Etete.
Apparently the accused is also under investigation for the murder and rape of a senior Etete resident on the night of December 31 last year.
Umhlali SAPS were not available for comment.
