Duiker hunted at Ballito construction site

Animal suffered injuries to head.

A duiker was rushed to the Ballito Veterinary Hospital on Monday morning, after being stoned and kicked by construction workers at the Ballito Junction mall site.

Salt Rock resident, James May was in the underground parking lot when he heard screaming coming from the construction site.

Two duikers were being chased by the workers, and luckily one managed to escape while the other was cornered against a fence.

“I shouted at them but I think all they thought of was ‘inyama’,” said May.

A foreman and two other workers arrived and put a stop to the hunt. They took the injured animal to the Ballito Veterinary Hospital.

Veterinarian Dr Kevin Stevens treated the young ram for injuries around the head and a ripped bottom lip.

“The animal was very traumatised and in shock and we have given it some painkillers and a sedative to calm it down.”

He said the animal will be rehabilitated before being released back into the wild. Stevens said hunting with large packs of dogs for bush meat is unfortunately a culture and a lot of education is needed to stop this.
