UPDATE: Child survives La Mercy shooting
While the surgery was successful the next 48 hours are crucial

The nine-year-old boy who was shot during a house robbery in La Mercy yesterday is recovering well after he underwent an emergency operation last night.
The boy’s uncle, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, said the bullet had caused damage to the young boy’s abdomen and intestines. He said the bullet was not removed during the surgery but that the damage it had caused had been largely resolved.
It was initially thought that the child had only been grazed by the bullet and he was taken to hospital by his parents.
An x-ray revealed that a bullet had entered his abdomen and lodged near his back.
“The priority was to fix the damage caused by the bullet.
“He is now recovering well and is already responsive but the next 48 hours are crucial.”
He said doctors were shocked that the child was so responsive considering the internal damage.
“We owe that to the thoughts and prayers from all the people who heard of the incident.”
Five armed robbers driving a Golf 5 approached the home in Eden Rose Walk, La Mercy yesterday under the pretext of wanting to enquire about a school that is run from the property during the week.
The two adults and three children who were home at the time locked themselves in a room and screamed for help.
The robbers took off after helping themselves to laptops and other valuables.
As they were driving away, they opened fire on the house.
The nine-year-old boy had been standing on the balcony when he was hit.
