Black Mamba bites Ballito snake catcher

The snake handler was preparing the snake to be photographed when he was bitten on the thumb.

A snake catcher at Ndlondlo Reptile Park had a near-death encounter when he was bitten by a Black Mamba snake this morning.

Neville Wolmarans of the Sugar Rush-based park just outside Ballito, said Janslang van Rooyen, a 50-year-old professional snake handler, was preparing the rescued reptile for a photo shoot when he was bitten.

“All our reptiles are wild and are rescued.

“We had a professional photo shoot and the handler picked the two-meter mamba out of the cage when it bit him on his thumb.

“We assume that the snake might have been nervous or maybe it got a bit of a shock,” said Wolmarans.

Luckily, Van Rooyen showed no signs of envenomation and was discharged from hospital this evening.
