Child goes missing at La Mercy Lagoon, found drowned

After arriving at the scene, lifeguards had already initiated a search for the missing child who had disappeared in the water while reportedly in the company of friends aged between nine and 12.

A joint effort to rescue a 11-year-old child from drowning at the La Mercy Lagoon yesterday (September 26) ended on a sad note when her body was found in the water.

Shortly after 3pm that afternoon, National Sea Rescue Institute Ballito duty crew joined the search following a report of a drowning in progress.

NSRI Ballito station commander, Quentin Power said a great number of people and emergency service teams had joined the search.

After arriving at the scene, lifeguards had already begun a search for the missing child who had disappeared in the water while reportedly in the company of friends aged between nine and 12.

“Police K9 officers were transported onto the lagoon aboard the NSRI sea rescue craft and an area was indicated to police divers who conducted a dive operation where they located and recovered the body of the missing child,” said Power.

The child was declared dead by paramedics.

The child’s body was later taken into the care of the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
