Abandoned newborn rescued from pit toilet

Wrapped in a plastic bag, the abandoned infant boy was rescued by a passer-by while police were called to the scene.

A newborn baby boy was rescued from a pit toilet in Nyoni in Ilembe district on Friday afternoon.

Community members alerted emergency services after a passer-by heard a child crying from inside the pit toilet, said paramedics.

Wrapped in a plastic bag, the abandoned infant boy was rescued by the passer-by while police were being called to the scene.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said the baby was stabilised by paramedics and taken to a local clinic in Mandeni for treatment.

The newborn’s mother has not been identified and police are still trying to locate her.

A case of child abandonment has been opened with the police.
