Child’s body found after five day search – Umvoti River

Search and rescue efforts were hampered by tropical storms and intense heat.

The body of 10-year-old Siyabonga Ndlovu was found today after he allegedly drowned while swimming in the Umvoti River near Groutville last week.

A five day search by police divers from Durban SAR and Metro Police SAR along with Durban and Umhlali K9SAR and the IPSS Aquatic Rescue team finally recovered the body downstream from where he initially disappeared.

According to Sgt Clinton Odayer of Umhlali K9 Search and Rescue the child’s body was recovered about 50 metres from the original search point.

“The finding of the body brings a conclusion to the sad story,” said Sgt Odayar.

Search and rescue efforts were hampered by difficult weather and heat but pushed on despite the rough conditions.

IPSS Aquatic Rescue team’s Dylan Meyrick said they were grateful that closure could be brought to all involved.
