12-year-old narrowly escapes drowning at Ballito beach

While Salmon Bay is not a protected beach, two lifeguards were luckily nearby when she was swept into the water.

A child believed to be about 11 to 12 years nearly drowned at Salmon Bay in Ballito this morning.

According to KwaDukuza lifeguard superintendent Bongani Xulu, the young girl was standing by the water’s edge, when she was hit by a wave and pulled into the sea.

“Fortunately there were lifeguards around and they were able to help her.

“I must stress that Salmon Bay is not a protected beach and people must not swim there.

“That beach is high risk, which is why in the festive season we send at least two lifeguards to patrol that stretch to hopefully prevent such incidents,” said Xulu.

Paramedics took the child to hospital.
