Five heavy duty tow trucks salvage 60-tonne crane truck from M4 crash
Salvage operations have damaged the road.
Five heavy duty tow trucks were used to salvage a 60-tonne crane truck which crashed down an embankment along the M4 near La Mercy.
The joint operation between a towing company, Metro and the Transport department started on Wednesday at 9am, and was expected to take five hours.
According to Metro spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad, efforts were slowed down drastically while trying to pull the crane truck onto the roadway, owing to the embankment shifting.
Salvage operations have damaged the road, and clean up operations are underway to remove oil and diesel spilled during the recovery overnight.
Transport officials are currently assessing the damage.
Owing to the narrow section of roadway, efforts to load the crane truck onto a flatbed truck have proven difficult, further delaying the operation.
If all goes well, Parboo explained, the M4 should be open in time for peak traffic this afternoon.
