Community backs The Orphan Fund

Phew, what a year this has been!

Covid-19 has brought about many challenges for most people, yet at the same time; a beautiful craftwork emerged in this time of hardship.

It has been a time of reassessing, and shifting focus, and an immense opportunity to come together as a community.

An opportunity to form wonderful relationships with volunteers and community members, finding a common goal as we all worked together to do our best to feed people.

March 26 saw the monumental soup drive start.

The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund became inundated with requests for food parcels as jobs and income shrank.

We are so grateful to the countless men and women who volunteered their services to transport food parcels, soup and other donations all around the Dolphin Coast.

To the ladies, thank you for knitting blankets and baby clothes, to thousands of homemade donated facemasks and for baby formula and food to sustain young mums with their babes.

So many people took the initiative to create independent drives all for one common goal.

The Orphan Fund looks forward to expanding its scope of effectiveness in the coming months, with more focus on education, skills transferal and mentorship.

Before lockdown we hosted the Valentine’s Day Raffle, a wonderful early morning yoga session at the Rain Farm plus a walk around, manned a table at the Karibu market and have a presence at the Seeff North Coast’s MTB competition at Seaton Estate in March.

Then also in March, we had another first which was a wonderful afternoon ‘Forest Tea’ at Waterberry.

We had to cancel the March/April fishing competition but were fortunate enough to have it on October 3.

This was a superb turnout, and such a fun morning.

Lots of and lots of prizes were won just for being there!

We still look forward to the annual Ballito Open Golf day on December 28 at Umhlali Country Club.

Do not forget to look out for the Orphan Fund Christmas boxes at your school or supermarket, we hope to offer many children special treats and bring some Christmas cheer!
