The tough crime-fighters of Ilembe District Saps showed their softer sides last week on a surprise visit to Asibathande Care Centre for disabled children.

Showing the children that the police are approachable and care about children’s rights, the Saps leadership brought a delivery of bedding, toys and food that would rival Santa in generosity.

The centre, in Lindelani township outside KwaDukuza, was started in 2007 by Sanelisiwe Nzungane (60) and now houses 20 children, 15 of whom are in diapers.

Nzungane runs the centre using her salary from Umphumulo Primary School where she works as a teacher, aided only by the children’s grant money.

She employs three women to care for the children.

“Saps coming in with bedding, toys and food make us very happy because we have zero support,” she said.

KwaDukuza station commander brigadier Sibongile Mhlongo thanked everyone who had supported the outreach.

“I plead with government departments, faith-based organisations, NGOs and residents to lend a hand in support of this amazing centre. We need to convert 16 days of activism by embarking on 365 days of activism,” said Mhlongo.
