Ballito residents step up to the chopping board to feed the hungry

It was love in action as more than 50 Ballito residents stepped up to chop vegetables to feed the hungry in front of Hops last Wednesday.

Responding to Rex Hunt’s call to action for the feeding scheme he heads up, the public veggie prep was a lively affair.

Hunger relief is a major focus for Hunt who has been providing nutritious meals for many people living below the bread line and who have borne the brunt of the Covid-19 crisis.

Spearheaded by Hunt, who is also the founder of the NPO, Against Drugs and Child Abuse (ADCA), the feeding scheme started at the beginning of June – in the midst of lockdown, when many primary caregivers lost their jobs.

Partnering with a NGO in Groutville, Hunt feeds more than 90 pensioners, providing them with a wholesome meal 3 times a week and a nutritious porridge to take home for the other days.

In Shaka’s Head they feed about 40 families, more than 60 children and a number of homeless people.

“The hot meal initiative could not run without the community’s dedicated volunteers, who once a week gather outside ADCA’s headquarters in Umhlali to chop fresh vegetables and prepare the nourishing stew. The hot meal is cooked on the premises of local catering company Olive Twist and Naked Bones and the food is transported in 20 litre buckets on Thursday afternoons and Friday mornings.”

Ingredients are donated by local businesses and individuals who cook up about 170 litres of hearty vegetable stew a week. 

The vegetable chopping will continue outside Hops on Wednesday at 8am for the next 2 weeks.
