His Way Outreach brings new charity shop to Shakaskraal

If you have gently-used toys or pre-loved trinkets cluttering up your house, look no further than the new His Way Outreach charity shop in Shakaskraal.

The shop opened in the second week of March as a funding stream for registered NPC, His Way Outreach (HWO).

HWO is directly involved in a number of low-income communities around the North Coast, running soup kitchens and other community feeding schemes in Shayamoya and Shaka’s Head.

Since the advent of Covid-19 and its impact on these communities, feeding schemes have been at an all time high with many families relying on them for a daily meal.

“Many of these families rely on grants to survive, but when you consider the costs of rent and transport to try and find work, they are forced to sometimes forgo meals,” said HWO founder, Jaqui Muir.

Feeding these communities comes at a cost, however, and a charity shop, on Shakaskraal’s bustling main road, proved to be the perfect opportunity.

“It has a dual purpose for us. Obviously the income is important, but we are now also able to supply quality and still usable products to these communities at a fraction of the price.”

There are more projects in the pipeline for HWO and they hope to soon get a skills development workshop off the ground in Shaka’s Head.

“We also planted a herb and vegetable garden in Shayamoya but a hungry chicken came and cleaned it out, it will be back and blooming again soon,” laughed Muir.

Clothing must be washed before it is donated and the shop will not accept anything that is broken.

The shop, located in Bhowan Centre on the R102 as it passes through Shakaskraal, is open on weekdays from 8am – 5pm as well as 8am – 2pm on Saturdays.
