Sub-Antarctic fur seal found stranded and injured at La Mercy beach on road to recovery
South African Association for Marine Biological Research spokesperson, Ann Kunz said on Monday that she was happy to report Neptune was eating and was going for short swims.
La Mercy had a rare visitor when a sub-Antarctic fur seal washed up on the beach last week.
The seal, which has been christened Neptune, was rescued by teams from the Ballito NSRI, uShaka Sea World and KZN Wildlife.

As he was very thin and had an injured flipper, he was taken to Sea World where he was put on antibiotics and fluids.

“He is eating hake and pilchards, and over the next week as he regains his strength we will start adding a little more variety to his diet,” she said.
“Although it is uncommon to find Sub-Antarctic fur seals along the KZN coastline, on average, 2 or 3 are spotted each year around this time off our coast,” she said.
