More than 50 helmets collected for cycling commuters

Two Ballito residents were able to fit 30 cyclists with bicycle helmets following an outpouring of donations.

The RE/MAX Dolphin Realtors agents Sally Mitchell and Allana Smith started a drive to get #HelmetsOnHeads just over a month ago, to collect helmets for commuters who were not able to afford the important safety measure.

They set up donation boxes and the campaign was an instant success, gathering more than 50 helmets to date.

“We really just wanted to help out our fellow community members who may not have had access to helmets.

There are so many commuters who ride unprotected so we were inspired to make a change,” said Sally.

The pair set up outside Tiffany’s Shopping Centre on Friday morning, enjoying a lively atmosphere as commuters were overjoyed to receive their helmets.

The helmets were only handed out to commuters on a bicycle. Senzo Mtshali, a petrol attendant from Sasol across the road joined in on the fun, singing and getting passing motorists involved in the initiative, said Sally.

“Senzo was such a lovely addition to the morning, he brought so much positivity and good energy! We are hoping he comes next time we do a donation.”

The donation boxes are still open and will continue to be as the pair hope to donate a batch of 30 every month until all local commuters are protected.

The boxes are located at Bench Coffee, Umhlali Prep, Ashton International College, KwikSpar Ballito Village and at the Ballito and Salt Rock RE/MAX offices.

If you are looking to donate, please ensure the helmets are still usable and in good condition.
