Interior trend surprise, reveals radio DJ turned Ballito interior designer

From radio DJ to interior designer, Margaret Westerhof says trends in the interior design world are being driven by the individual, not the trade.

A guest speaker at the monthly-held virtual Property Workshop hosted by Margaret Hirsch of Hirsch’s, Westerhof discussed the latest trends in interior design.

She cut short her career as a radio DJ to start her interior design business, Rose Interiors – based in Ballito – and said that despite the challenges of lockdown business was going well.

“It was interesting being thrown into the deep end and discussing turning home spaces into work spaces with clients. That has definitely been the most popular trend over the last 12 months,” said Westerhof.

She pointed out that trends are no longer driven by the trade, but rather by the individual.

“With people spending more and more time at home, it is becoming crucial for them to be totally comfortable in their homes,” she said.

Even global trends are no longer a deciding factor for individuals.

Instead, she said, driving factors today include acoustics, functionality and eliminating anxiety.

“Sometimes you just need to take a chance with something which stands out and puts out a message that you want to convey for a particular space.”

The monthly Property Workshop sees people joining from across the country.

The next workshop September 30. Guests will include Matt Bouwer from Wanderlust who will be discussing the tiny homes trend.
