The ANC ward candidate who was shot and injured last weekend says not even a bullet will stop him from campaigning.

Ward 4 (Shaka’s Head) candidate, Jetro Banda, was shot on Saturday while canvassing door-to-door for the local government elections on November 1.

Two unknown men opened fire on him and an unidentified man, injuring both, said police.

Banda has been released from hospital and is recovering from home.

“Many people died for the ANC before me and no human being will determine how and when I die.

“It is all in the hands of the Lord. I will continue campaigning for the ANC in Shaka’s Head and even return to the spot where I was shot,” said Banda.

Banda was councillor for Shaka’s Head from 1996 to 2016, when he was removed following violent protests. In February 2016, residents closed the N2 and R102 for several hours and set Banda’s home and car alight.

Banda was replaced by Mlamuli Ndlela who retained the seat for the ANC that year.

Residents told the Courier last week that Banda was being accused of manipulating the ANC’s selection process, which both Banda and ANC provincial spokesperson Nhlakanipho Ntombela dismissed.

“There was no dispute launched in regards to the branch process.

“Banda was number 3 in the ANC branch general meeting and won the community vote.

“Those who are saying he manipulated the process must say which one,” said Ntombela.

Banda said the community had chosen him to represent them and he would not be intimidated.

“I am not in charge of any selection process. So how would I be able to manipulate it? Those who say this are just playing cheap politics,” said Banda.
