Elderly man found dead at Sheffield Beach

Rescue workers believe the man fell on the rocks and possibly drowned.

An elderly man who was seen walking along Sheffield Beach with crutches earlier today has been declared dead by paramedics.

KwaDukuza head lifeguard Bongani Xulu said the man, believed to be a resident, was found on the rocks at the beach.

While the cause of death is not clear as yet, it is suspected that he may have slipped on the rocks and bumped his head, or possibly drowned in shallow water.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said the man had been brought to shore by bystanders.

“Family members of the deceased arrived on the scene, as they had been out looking for him after he did not return home after a walk.”

Herbst speculated that the man had likely lost his footing and fallen into the water, at which point he drowned.
