Family of missing Shaka’s Head man suspect catfishing by fake girlfriend
Dumisani Mabovana has not been seen since last Sunday, after he left to meet his alleged 'girlfriend' for the first time.
A Shaka’s Head man has been missing for 7 days after allegedly being lured away by someone he met online.
Dumisani Mabovana (35) has been missing since last Sunday after he left to meet his girlfriend for the first time in Waterloo near Verulam.
The Shaka’s Head resident initially traveled with a friend to meet her on Saturday, October 2 but the friend refused to let him leave the car, fearing a trap.
His sister-in-law, Vuiceka Ndzonya said no one in the family had met said her and worried that Dumisani had been set up.
“His friend became nervous because the ‘girlfriend’ would not answer the phone and only responded via WhatsApp,” said Ndzonya.
Dumisani was already dating another woman, Noxolo Lubinga (22) who lives in Empangeni.
Noxolo said that there had been no indication from Dumisani that he was seeing another woman and that it came completely out of the blue.
“I saw him on Friday, October 1 and everything seemed okay before I went back to Empangeni.
“The next day, he sent me a message saying that I must leave him alone. I don’t know where it came from,” she said.
Neither Noxolo or the other family members could confirm how Dumisani met the alleged girlfriend, saying that their only knowledge of her came from the WhatsApp conversations.
On Sunday, October 3, Dumisani claimed he was being called out for his job as an electrician.
He left Shaka’s Head with his tools at around 8pm.
“The Uber driver who dropped him off said Dumisani had asked to be left at the Umdloti bridge near the N2.”
He has not been seen since.
“We think that this girlfriend on WhatsApp was fake and that Dumisani has been taken by the person behind the messages.”
He was reported missing at Umhlali Saps on Tuesday, October 5, after his boss indicated he had not reported for work.
The employer also confirmed that there had been no call out on Sunday night.
“We are heartbroken that he is missing. We are praying to find him to return or for his remains to be found as that would ease the pain.”
The Umhlali Saps officer responsible for the case, Detective Mfunwa confirmed that the police were searching for Dumisani.
