Pianist Noelin Dorasamy is living his dream one piano key at a time
While he has already achieved his goal of becoming a full-time musician, Noelin says he wants to develop further, producing his own music and performing alongside other musicians.
As a financial advisor, Noelin Dorasamy never had time to sit behind his own piano at home, but that all changed when he quit his job and embraced his family’s roots in music.
Today, one finds him making magic on the piano at Ballito Lifestyle Centre’s The Market.
Born in Overport in 1981, Noelin has always been passionate about music and began playing instruments from the age of 10, first the harmonica and then the tambourine.
“My late dad was a musician and played the piano, guitar and harmonica,” he says, explaining that his dad also led his own church in Phoenix where Noelin and his brother picked up what they could from the church band.
“We were always eager to learn. It was a joyous day when a black, glossy piano was delivered to our house.”
His dad pushed him to practice, and he says if it was not for this he may never have become an accomplished piano player.
Career-wise, he moved into the world of finance as an advisor, but after 10 years had the urge to move on and in 2019 made the change.
“Music is what I am passionate about and I thought it would be great if I could play every day for a living.
“While it was not an easy choice to make considering I have a family to support, I decided to take the leap of faith.”
Noelin said God had been good to him, and he was grateful to be able to share his talent with others.
Married with two daughters, he spends his time helping his children with their homework when not behind the piano. His daughters are also aspiring musicians and singers.
Being a regular at The Market, Noelin has a healthy following and from past requests know what their favourite hits are.
“I am grateful to have an audience who appreciates my music. Playing the piano is my happy place. I play with emotion that brings out the best and sets the tone.”
Ballito Lifestyle Centre has accepted a proposal to have him play throughout the week.
Catch Noelin at The Market Mondays to Fridays from 10am to 12.30pm.
