Quick graduation for iLembe’s hotshot students
Fifty-two youths from KwaDukuza and Mandeni municipalities entered the programme in October last year to gain knowledge and skills for entry into the fast-paced and constantly changing digitalisation of the workplace.
Five students who enrolled for the year-long iLembe ICT course to study coding app and web development, have completed the course within six months.
Sinenhlanhla Cele, Nelisiwe Zephi, Sinenhlanhla Mncube, Siyanda Mncube, and Thubelihle Mbatha made short work of graduating with a national certificate in systems development
The project is part of the Vuthela iLembe LED support programme, a joint initiative of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs of the Swiss Confederation, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, the iLembe district municipality, and the KwaDukuza and Mandeni local municipalities.
“The commitment of these young people to complete a year-long course in six months amid very challenging times, bodes well for their future careers,” said Vuthela technical co-ordinator Shannon Moffet.
Recognising that many youths do not have access to computers and data at home, the project has partnered with the district’s development agency, Enterprise iLembe, to make available their Incubator for the KwaDukuza youth to complete their studies.
In Mandeni, a partnership with the Moses Kotane Institute has seen the digital centre on the Umfolozi TVET College’s Mandeni campus being available to the iLembe ICT students.
