Ballito retiree and helper repair 35 potholes by themselves

“I don’t want to allow the area in which I live to deteriorate to the point where it cannot be fixed. We have been abandoned by local government which has become dysfunctional at every level."

When Ballito resident Guy Goes’ wife told him that somebody should do something about the potholes in Madeleine Drive where they live, he got to work patching them himself.

Starting the repairs last Thursday, it took Guy and his helper, Bongani Nomandla, a day-and-a-half to patch 35 potholes, with the remaining ones filled-in by Friday.

He said the reasoning behind his motivation to do the work himself was two-fold.

“We as residents are capable of doing so much instead of just complaining,” explained the retiree.

Guy believes the community is capable of stepping up to the challenge even though the responsibility of road and verge maintenance does not fall on them.

Aside of patching up Madeleine Drive, Guy once a month drives around Ballito in his Toyota Fortuner, armed with gloves and a skip.

He cleans up trash which has been discarded carelessly.

On average, he said, he collects about a ton worth of garbage each month.

“We should be proud of where we live, and this should be reflected in our town,” Guy concluded.
