Close-knit Salt Rock group provide winter warmth on Mandela Day
Although Mandela Day is meant to motivate 67 minutes of community service, the ladies spent far more time to ensure the children felt the love that the day represents.
Grade R pupils at Shakaskraal SA Primary were excited to receive a huge hamper of more than 200 knitted items for Mandela Day.
The 174 Grade R pupils were each given at least one item, which ranged from beanies and jerseys to blankets and scarves.
All of the donated goods were knitted by members of the bi-monthly craft group that meets at the Salt Rock library.
“We are so grateful to all of the members who did the knitting and sewing, but also to everyone who donated fabric and lent help in other ways,” said project initiator Gail Stefano.
The children were overjoyed with their presents which will help keep them warm through the remaining winter chill.
Two further projects were also started at the school by Stefano, including a vegetable garden and hanging vegetable wall.
“To teach the children how to look after the seedlings and also to give them responsibility, we cut out empty milk cartons and hung them on a fence to serve as planters,” she said.
Seeds were donated by the Umhlali and District Garden and Flower Club and will hopefully soon bloom into usable produce.
This joins the spinach and kale garden that has already begun to flower.
