Mandela Day sees organisations rally to support Melville community care center
Enduduzweni, which cares for more than 130 children each day by providing them with meals, does outstanding community work in Melville, near KwaDukuza.
Within as little as seven days, The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund, Seaward Estate Homeowners Association and Ballito Round Table managed to collect enough goods to keep operations at the Enduduzweni Community Care Center going for some time to come.
The center, founded in 2008 by a group of residents, also provides food parcels to 58 needy families when it is able to do so.
“Most people do not realise the impact Covid-19 has had on our operations. We rely heavily on community support,” said Enduduzweni project manager, Mondli Ngema.
“Apart from looking after children, we also support families. Many breadwinners were retrenched during the Covid-19 pandemic and have struggled to make ends meet since. With our help, the burden is eased to an extent,” he said.
In the past year alone the number of people in need increased significantly.
Seaward Estate’s compliance manager, Kathija Ismail, said helping the community is what they do.
“We are thankful to the residents who supported the effort. Now more than ever we appreciate what we have, especially seeing how little others have.”
Collected items included tinned foods, maize meal, water and cooldrinks.
