LIVing it up at new Umhlali charity store

As part of the store's outreach, they have also empowered more than 100 local women who sell excess clothing that does not make the shelves.

Thrifters take note – an exciting new charity store has opened at Sugar Village centre in Umhlali.

The shop, a second location for the highly successful LIV Village store that opened in Durban North in 2020, has a wide variety of new and pre-loved items.

From racks lined with in vogue fashion to linen, sports items and homeware, the store has something for even the most discerning customer.

“Most items are donated but we also have a range of new goods that we take on consignment for the store,” said LIV Village co-founder, Joan Smith.

This includes a range of items from Kookaburra, which is mostly hockey equipment for now but will also include cricket gear when the season begins later this year.

“Sport equipment is so expensive, particularly when your children grow out of it every year. So we offer new items at cost price. We also have great quality second-hand equipment,” she said.

For Joan and husband Tich, the second location seemed like an obvious choice given the success of the Durban North store.

“Most people thought we were crazy to open a retail outlet during Covid-19 but we have just had the most amazing support from the community.”

The store will initially only have a three-month run in Umhlali until the end of September, after which they will decide whether to make it permanent.

All funds raised go directly to LIV Village which provides holistic care for vulnerable children and orphans in Cottonlands.

As part of the store’s outreach, they have also empowered more than 100 local women who sell excess clothing that does not make the shelves.

This aside from the employment opportunities offered in-store and in the warehouse that serves both outlets. Oftentimes this includes children who have graduated from the village.

If you are looking for something specific or would simply like to browse for a hidden gem, make sure to visit LIV’s charity store in Umhlali.

All donated goods are taken in-store assuming they are of usable quality and clean, with options available for furniture pickups too.

If you would like to help by donating your time, the store is also always on the lookout for volunteers.

You can call the store at 064 079 3809, or Nqobile for pickups at 071 602 0177.
