#Review: Rewilding your skin the Esse way

Homegrown bio-clinical skincare brand, Esse, has launched a range of professional, customised skin rewilding treatments which incorporate advanced pre- and probiotics, as well as the application of live probiotics.

I was recently invited to the Ballito branch at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre to experience the Esse Live Probiotic Experience facial.

It was particularly exciting to test out Esse’s facial products because I have been struggling with really dry, almost sandpaper skin.

I had tried a few products off the shelf but nothing had helped.

My T-Zone (forehead, nose, and chin) was always quite oily, up until about six months ago when I noticed the change.

I recently turned 37, and the ageing effect on my skin has never been more apparent.

My skin needed a reset, to undo the damage exacted by Father Time and inferior products which have only been compounding the problem.

Everyone knows how important probiotics are for the stomach, but did you know your skin needs them too?

I was fascinated to learn that the development of the microbiome begins in utero, and critical to the initial colonisation process of the newborn microbiome is the transfer of microbes from the mother to her newborn in the birth canal.

Research indicates this may serve as an early inoculation process with implications for long-term health outcomes of newborns.

My skin has been through a lot since then however, so I was curious to learn what the facial could do for me.

The facial included the application of five billion colony-forming units per ml of live lactobacillus probiotics to the skin, followed by the Esse Exclusion Mask.

This provides the perfect anaerobic environment for the bacteria to start to colonise.

Esse calls this ‘rewilding the skin’ to attain a diverse microbial ecology, which is essential for long-term skin health.

Once the treatment was complete, I could already feel a difference, but there was still some work to be done.

So Esse gave me a starter kit of daily facial products* to try.

This included the Cream Cleanser, Toner, Hyaluronic Serum, Repair Oil and Omega Deep Moisturiser.

It was a relief to know that every time I washed my face the products were ‘feeding’ my face.

The results have been excellent. Over the next two months my skin steadily improved with each wash.

I love spraying the mist toner onto my face and the repair oil does not leave me oily at all.

Best of all is the smell. Kissing my son goodnight, he tells me I smell like cupcakes.

I still have some mild dryness/ rough skin on my forehead. It may be time to test out the range’s exfoliator.

After two months of daily use the products received are mostly half depleated, except the Repair Oil which has last two months (used morning and evening).
