Major N2 upgrades underway from KwaMashu to Umdloti

Traffic disruptions are expected to last some two months as the South African National Road Agency (Sanral) carries out upgrades on the N2 between KwaMashu and Umdloti Bridge.

Workers will be building a median barrier wall and additional lanes will be constructed.

Sanral Eastern Region project manager, Trevor Zumani, said work so far on the northbound carriageway necessitated the narrowing of lane widths from KwaMashu up to the Mount Edgecombe interchange.

“Three lanes remain open on the northbound carriageway, but on the southbound carriageway the number of lanes has been reduced to two,” Zumani said, noting that while unavoidable, work has caused severe congestion during peak traffic hours, especially when travelling south.

“From August 2 to 6, daytime work from 9am to 3pm will include the offloading and stacking of barriers alongside the median of the northbound carriageway, more or less in the vicinity of the Umhlanga off-ramp, heading north toward King Shak International Airport.

“This may create some congestion and motorists are warned to allow extra time to get through,” Zumani said.

Nighttime work is also taking place, and will see concrete barriers moved into their final positions on the northbound carriageway. This starts roughly 1km north of the KwaMashu interchange.

“At the same time, work will be carried out on narrowing the lanes on the southbound carriageway, from the Mount Edgecombe interchange bridge as far as the ramps onto the N2. No major disruption is anticipated.”

• Daytime work from August 8-13: Includes the offloading and stacking of barriers on the northbound carriageway to beyond the King Shaka International Airport off-ramp.
• Nighttime work from August 7-11: The positioning of barriers into their final positions on the northbound carriageway. Lanes will be remarked on the southbound carriageway.
• Daytime & nighttime work from August 15-20: More offloading and stacking of barriers on the northbound lane during daytime, beyond the King Shaka International Airport off-ramp. Lanes on the southbound carriageway between Umdloti and Mount Edgecombe will be remarked at nighttime.

“We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused during the road closure. We appeal to the public to plan their trips accordingly, especially when accessing travel hubs such as the airport. We further appeal to road users to adhere to the road signs and speed limits when approaching and travelling through the construction site,” Zumani said.
