Water purification system brings relief to Tongaat’s Haven of Rest

Haven of Rest in Tongaat is now capable of producing 1 000 litres of purified water every hour thanks to the installation of a water purification system, courtesy of the Dischem Foundation and the Humanitarian Empowerment Fund.

Humanitarian Empowerment Fund (HEF) founder and director and Dischem Foundation partner, Clete Stevis, said the HEF had been assisting with food relief from Umlazi to Merebank after the floods, ending up at Tongaat.

“We saw the need of about 50 000 people who have been left stranded without water,” he said, noting that Haven of Rest attends to the care of the community at large over and above its own 150 residents, many of whom are orphans.

It was not long before a solution was found after the HEF approached the Dischem Foundation.

The R230 000 water purification system requires only R5 000 every three months for maintenance costs.

Haven of Rest also serves as a children’s home, Hospice rehabilitation centre and it offers kidney dialysis services.

The NGO and surrounding community have been hard hit by the disastrous floods in April and May, leaving the community without running water.

Water is not available for collection at Haven of Rest, but is instead being distributed by the NGO.
