North Coast spreads goodwill on Mandela Day
North Coast people supported the cause in a big way last Tuesday, rolling up their sleeves in a wide variety of projects.
The annual Mandela Day campaign motivates efforts across the country for citizens, organisations and businesses to step up and undertake initiatives in service of the less privileged.
At Groutville, the Zimbali Lakes Resort Homeowners Association dedicated their 67 minutes to the Enduduzweni Community Care Centre, a safe haven and educational facility for underprivileged children.
Zimbali Lakes, together with sponsors Fidelity Security, Conrite Fences and Countryline Horticulture, donated much-needed groceries, toys and sports equipment, among other items.
Association administrator Roxy Lapersonne said they looked forward to continuing with community drives with the goal of assisting the less fortunate.
The Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society (TCW) team rallied to the cause of three schools – Simunye Stars Playschool, Breeze Crèche and Truro Empowerment Centre – providing goodie bags, some clothing items, soup and bread and even some performances to entertain the children.
TCW staff also donated materials, cotton reels and other sewing items in the Ndondolo area and the Shree Veeraboga Emperumal Temple where sewing skills centres are operated.
TCW thanked Mediclinic Victoria Hospital for their efforts in painting and revamping the welfare offices’ reception area.
The Shakaskraal Association for the Aged headed out to Nkobongo where teams distributed hampers, after which trees were planted to spruce up the association’s centre.
The coastal branch of the Democratic Alliance spent the day at Nkobongo Resource Centre where councillors emphasised the importance of learning to read and promoted literacy.
Children were handed workbooks to practice their writing, while enjoying cupcakes and cooldrinks.
Education being the most powerful weapon with which to change the world, Dube TradePort headed to Sunfield Home at Verulam, a small school for intellectually impaired pupils.
They provided the school with resources to renovate its facilities, with particular focus on the school’s vegetable garden.
