Taxi intimidation continues in Shakaskraal
This issue has been ongoing for some months as the association claims bakkie owners are not only taking away their passengers, but also jeopardise the safety of passenger.
Tensions escalated when members of the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association again stopped bakkies carrying workers at Shakaskraal on Tuesday morning, this time allegedly demanding a fee of R10 000 for their “release.”
The situation was eventually resolved by the intervention of police.
This issue has been ongoing for some months as the association claims bakkie owners are not only taking away their passengers, but also jeopardise their safety by using vehicles not suitable for safe transport.
Association spokesperson Siyabonga Ntombela said association members have become frustrated with the lack of action by authorities in this regard.
He said they have repeatedly raised this concern, but the problem persists and is left unattended.
“The number of offending bakkies is not more than 10, so we fail to understand why law enforcement agencies are not addressing the matter. But it must be clear, we will not stop with our action,” said Ntombela.
He said he could not confirm whether R10 000 “release” fees were demanded as he was not at the scene on Tuesday morning.
