Shaka’s Head children march against child abuse

By June this year, KwaDukuza Child Welfare had dealt with 12 cases of sexual abuse, 52 cases of child neglect, seven cases of physical abuse, and 10 cases of abandoned children.

About 50 children marched against child abuse in Shaka’s Head on Saturday.

Organised by the Shaka’s Head Youth Forum, participating children were educated on safety tips and how to seek help if they ever felt unsafe.

The march came in response to recent distressing incidents in the area.

Among these was the tragic death of six-year-old Minenhle Khumalo, who was discovered murdered after being taken from her home while her mother and stepfather were assisting with a fire at a nearby informal settlement.

Last week an elderly man was arrested for allegedly raping a four-year-old girl.

Subsequent to this event, a 21-month-old Etete boy was reported missing.

He was located alive in a bush one kilometer away from his home last Wednesday morning, but community members believe he was abducted.

The Courier recently highlighted the increase in child abuse in KwaDukuza and Tongaat.

By June of this year, KwaDukuza Child Welfare had dealt with 12 cases of sexual abuse, 52 cases of child neglect, seven cases of physical abuse, and 10 cases of abandoned children.

Similarly, the Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society received reports of child sexual abuse and other forms of mistreatment at least once or twice per week, with neglect being the most prevalent issue.

They handled a minimum of seven rape cases by June of this year.

Social workers expressed grave concern over the trend of parents leaving their young children unattended.

This widespread neglect significantly heightens children’s vulnerability to sexual predators, as they are left alone for extended periods.
